Tues 21st Jan – (Mary, Jo, Micaela, Bea)
The purpose of the active lifestyle group is to educate older people to keep them in good health. In the morning we attended the group and captured footage of them talking together about various health issues. The class was run by a visiting doctor who led the discussion and gave them useful medical information and advice on how to stay healthy.
We took it in turns to film, we got various shots of the group, trying to capture their expressions and responses to the talk, as well as footage of the doctor explaining with diagrams and models. We tried to incorporate movement in the static scene, with pans of the seating arrangement, and shifting focus during over shoulder shots.
Problems: The colour temperatures between the college camera and Micaelas camera didn’t match up and occasionally we got into each others shots when filming with two cams from different angles.
After this the doctor tried to set up a discussion between the older people, about how useful the group was, for us to film. However it felt far too staged as the setting was un-natural. It will be best to return next week and film them chatting in a more relaxed situation.
Bea and Jo went with some of the group to film them using the gym.
In the afternoon we were meant to be filming the Nia exercise group, however the instructor was not able to attend and instead the Halo group used the function room for unstructured free-time. The halo group hadn’t met the 2nd years properly apart from myself, and so were quite cautious to interact, so the rest of the group left to give them some space, and I stayed to film.
It was a bit chaotic, with loud music playing, and the group were dancing around and having fun with the staff. Although this was great to watch, there was only so much footage of this we would be able to use, so most of it won’t be needed. After the dancing the group spent time sat in a circle speaking about things and interacting with Rob (from 1st year) and myself. Micalea joined when the group were more comfortable and engaged with them. This created lots of good footage, of peoples talking and laughing with each other.
We have agreed to share the Halo footage with the 1st years, as this may be useful to them.
