Cultural Consumption: Task 13

Have a conversation online with an art student in another country

Recently my friend Will moved to Berlin. We talk roughly every week over Skype or Facebook.

Will does a lot of music production, mainly techno/minimal, and had just started a music label ‘BaumBaum’. He has produced websites and has created the graphics and layout himself. We have discussed his progress with the art side of the label, I think it looks really successful, with a consistency throughout the labels Soundcloud, website and Facebook site. On the Soundcloud, artists from the label who will promotes all have personalised display images in keeping with the labels own style.

He also has organised various club nights in Berlin, and has put a lot of work into the creative design of these. For example he recently took over the design of a club for night, transforming the space into a exciting experience with different themed rooms. One room was themed around underwater, and had projections, from documentary footage of whales and fish, on the dance floor, walls and ceiling.

Talking to Will about his move to a different city and launching his label has inspired me to think more about the kind of work I would like to do. I am interesting to use video for different purposes rather than only factual documentaries, and found his use of video projections really creative.

I am planning a visit to see him in Berlin, and I haven’t been yet, so this will be an exciting opportunity. It will be great to go to exhibitions, and events which showcase new art, particularly film and video. Hopefully this will influence my own film making.
